Aleena, Kavisha and Jessica made us all proud when they represented us at the first ever Student Google Summit on Aug 12 at Hobsonville Point Primary School. They were joined by hundreds of other learners from around Auckland and facilitated and participated in some exciting workshops about learning with digital technologies. There was a lot of work leading up to this day. First the girls met with Ms Wilkes to express their interest, brainstorm what they could present and then write and submit their pitch to the GEGNZ. They demonstrated passion, commitment and skills while meeting their deadline. This was their pitch:
Using Google Sites for our Learning Pathways
We are going to be presenting our Learning Pathways. Our learning pathways are in Google Sites. Every learner at OrmPS has a Learning Pathway, even all of our Learning Coaches. We like using Google sites because it has some features that some site makers don't for example: In Google sites you can edit the background on the site so that it won't be all blank, we can embed docs and other online artefacts, put in pictures, link out to our learning, share with our learning coaches and families and so much more! Come and learn with us on our learning pathways journey.
They were of course successful and were added to the programme. They then had to create their presentation and including a fun kahoot game as well. The learners decided it would be great if they could practice their workshops the day before to iron out any crinkles and so they were able to facilitate their workshops for the rest of the habitat. Amidst technical difficulties they persevered and responded to feedback making some small changes to improve their presentation. On the big day the girls demonstrated confidence and resilience when many devices couldn’t access the internet. We were very proud of the way they solved problems, remained calm, positive and supported the participants. Way to go Aleena, Kaivsha and Jessica!

Key Competencies/Vision Principles

Jessica, Kavisha and Aleena showed they could relate well with others both in their collaborative effort in creating and facilitating their presentation and in responding to feedback. They participated and contributed, managing themselves in 3 other sessions on the day and took their learning back to OrmPS to share with others. They showed curiosity in the google cardboard session and made connections to prior knowledge. They were capable at solving problems when there were technical difficulties and constantly collaborated to maximise their own learning and that of others.

NYLD iMovie Learning Story - August 2015
Learners: Jessica, Nisita & Karleil Learning Coach: D Wilkes
|
Learning Area: KCs and Literacy Date: Aug 5
|
Learning Observed
|
Jessica, Karleil and Nisita collaborated together to provide a wonderful and inspirational component to the ‘Leadership Experience’ as a long awaited follow up to the NYLD that all the Year 6s attended in Term 2. The learners co-constructed a presentation and talk about the highlights from the NYLD day (which can be found in the Leadership Experience presentation). They sparked the curiosity of the crowd with the strong message of leadership. The learners loved watching the video and most walked away thinking about the leaders who have influenced them. Practicing their public speaking, writing, presenting and leading was what they did while the audience enjoyed their entertaining iMovie.

While Jessica, Nisita and Karleil collaborated they made direct and indirect connections to their experience at NYLD and their knowledge of leaders/leadership. They related to others, managed themselves responsibly and participated enthusiastically on the day. They were collaborative and responded to changes with resilience. The preparation for the presentation was great and their short blurbs were a nice finishing touch.

Reading research shows that good readers
With this in mind we deliberately constructed a ‘book club’ of sorts this term. We began by learning about how to select and why to select a ‘Best Fit’ book- please ask Jessica what book she is reading and how she knows it is a best fit on a regular basis. The Adjectives learned all about the 5 finger strategy to help them choose a book. The Adjectives group was also introduced to an online book resource called http://booktrackclassroom.com which can be accessed anytime. In our Literature Circle each learner has a different role each week: Summariser, Literary Luminary, Word Wizard, Discussion Director, Connector, Artful Artist or Researcher which ensures that the book club runs smoothly. It has been fantastic to observe Jessica engage with each of these roles seamlessly and actively contribute to conversations- she is a role model for the other learners.

Drama Learning Story - May 2015
Learner: Amin, Shivin and Jessica Date: May 20, 2015
|
Learning Area: The Arts- Drama Learning Coach: Diana Wilkes

Learning Observed
|
During iExperience this term with the Strategic Leadership Team (SLT), we have been learning how to use movement and space to effectively communicate. The lasting understanding is that people represent their culture and heritage in different dramatic ways- past and present. Learners had a variety of opportunities to explore the use of space, props and their body for communicating different ideas. Amin, Shivin and Jessica worked in a group to use dramatic techniques to explore drama elements and conventions and exhibited a real passion and enthusiasm for performing. When asked to initiate and develop ideas with others to create dramatic 1 minute skit about a culture, the group selected British culture. They generated many different ideas of what they could present and did a clear mime of fencing and drinking tea using real and imaginary props.

Together they exemplified Capabilities in following complex instructions and ultimately met the success criteria. They related to each other well and managed themselves and their time wisely. Together they were able to make Connections between what they knew collectively about the culture and how to express that with movement, no sound and imaginary props.

Jessica's Narrative Assessment- Digital Citizenship - 12.03.15
Learner: Jessica Learning Coach: DiWilkes Date: 12.03.15
|
Learning Area: Social Sciences / Key Competencies
|
Learning Observed
|
Today, Jessica was selected for a special ‘capability corner’ session in order to upskill some learners in our habitat as experts. Jessica demonstrated a natural affinity for using digital technologies and can discuss what makes a good digital citizen and what we should avoid doing online to be safe. She can explain what her ‘digital footprint’ is and how to keep it positive. She spent some time navigating to her Learning Pathway and blog and was able to explain to others new ways to access this. Jessica also contributed to her blog and added to her iReflection document.
